Our new language
The internet as everything else in our lives has dictated the language we use when communicating. In days of old, there was a clear definitive idea of how things should be said and how to write tools. Grammar, spelling, editing and the like. All this still exists and much needed for communion amongst the masses.
But let’s examine some of the new language tools that have become part of our every day speak, so to speak:
Let me google this and I will let you know. (Verb?)
Do you Twitter? (Action?)
Why don’t you Twitter that. (Must know what they are discussing.)
Did you FB it? (Huh?)
You should, it might go viral. (Disease?)
Thanks for friending me. (Like conversate!)
#FF means Follow Friday on Twitter. (Acronym)
Did you blog this? (action)
I’m so blogging this conversation. (verb?)
You have to be in the Blogosphere. (place)
And of course, let’s not forget that Twitter allows us only 140 characters which cuts down significantly on language skills, or maybe on too much chatter, not likely.
Language is the slave of humanity not the other way around, so let’s bask in the joy of the new language of the internet. Please do not, do not do it when you write a novel, please!
