January 12, 1856 – April 14, 1925
It is interesting that he is labeled an American painter since he was born and lived in Europe all his life. True he was born to American parents but he hardly came to the States and most of his work is of the European continent. He studied in Paris and lived most of his life in London.
His 900 or so portraits come to life off the canvas. Prolific, he also painted 2000 water colors and many many sketches.
Critics love to tear his work apart with comments that range from superficial brush strokes to lack of depth. Yet, he was popular and his work remains as some of the best loved work.
