Today is National Quilting Day.
I wonder if you have ever looked closely at a quilt and what it takes to create one? It is a wonder and an amazement to look at those close stitches one after the other, one as close to the other as possible. When I was being taught how to properly quilt, the stitches, I was informed, had to be 13 stitches to the inch. Imagine how tight and how small that is.
For years they were made by hand. For years they were the product of left overs that could be used instead of being thrown away. Quilts are the symbol of frugal people who had enough to live on without waste. Clothes were never thrown out, they were cut up to squares and used to make those marvelous covers that we all love so dearly.
The designs came with the immigrants from Europe and they differ because of the rich cultures of every country that melded in the our beloved United States.
I have had a love of quilt for years. Always impressed, always in awe of the stamina and the patience that these women put in their work for their families. Survival tactics that we could use to live by if we are to survive economical depression in the future.
